The Symmetrical Doors Jacket

850.00

This jacket features two symmetrical doors representing the gender equality that the Shakers practiced.

Shaker society provides a historical American example in which women were the political, economic, and social equals of men. However, equality for women did not mean ‘doing what men do.’ Since women had already achieved parity in power, they performed the tasks for which they had been trained or were best equipped physically to do. The two symmetrical doors on the jacket allude to the notion of gender parity, as they lead to the separate mens and womens quarters.
