Ladder Back Chair Jacket

825.00

The jacket features six of the renowned Shaker ladder-back chairs, each in a different size, to represent the ‘come as you are’ philosophy of Shaker communalism.

Shakers were the largest and longest lasting communal experiment in the the US; even Friedrich Engels, co author of the Communist Manifesto, wrote about the Shakers in admiration. Of course, certain guidelines like celibacy and strict work schedules were adhered to, but people of all races, religions, and motivations were welcomed by the Shakers. The Shakers knowingly accepted the many people who came in autumn under the guise of genuine converts only to leave in the springtime. As collectivists, Shakers required dedication to their values, but these values didn’t attempt to stamp out individual freedom and identity. Ann Lee, the Shakers’ founder, discovered her own way of relating to God within herself, and this individualistic impulse caused her to be jailed multiple times in England for breaking with the Christian establishment.
